previous game history; N/A
personality; Although born into a life of privilege in the noble House Beoulve, Ramza was always an underdog. The runt of the litter, and born to a common mother unlike his older brothers, who are of entirely noble lineage, the game description states Ramza turned out the worst of all his siblings and is keenly aware of it. As a sixteen-year-old in the Gariland Military Akademy, he trains as a squire to one day become a knight of the Order of the Northern Sky, though likely one destined to obscurity. What he sees on his missions, however, troubles him: he's forced to do battle with the Corpse Brigade, a group of thieves, peasants, and disaffected veterans who have yet to be compensated for their efforts in the Fifty Years' War, and so have turned against the nobility. This comes to a head when his best friend's sister, Tietra Hieral, is abducted by the Corpse Brigade, and Ramza's own brother orders her to be killed when he decides she is a hindrance to the mission. As a lowborn, she was deemed worthless and expendable.
This event shatters Ramza's sheltered worldview, and he turns his back on House Beoulve. He reinvents himself by taking on his mother's surname, Lugria, and becoming a sellsword. Amongst all the political maneuvering and treachery that would follow, and the outbreak of the War of the Lions, Ramza fights to protect the weak and helpless from injustice, no matter the personal hardship, so that the tragedy that befell Tietra might never be repeated. This motivation draws him away from his mercenary lifestyle, instead taking a stand against the corruption of both the Crown and Church. He refuses to be made a puppet to the whims of others, no matter how outmatched he is against the might of his enemies. And he makes many powerful enemies, insisting on protecting Princess Ovelia against the warring factions of Ivalice that would manipulate -- or assassinate -- her, then later, insisting on seeking out the truth about the Zodiac Stones, being branded a religious heretic in the process.
Ramza is very serious, quiet, and soft-spoken, and despite rejecting his life as a noble, still formal in his dealings. Even so, he treats others as equals worthy of respect, regardless of their standing, having cast aside his prejudices based on social class. Though never formally knighted himself, he believes in the virtues of gallantry, and will always rush to the aid of others in need without expecting any recompense. He later claims he fights to uphold the honour of House Beoulve, but also that a name means nothing if it is used to enact injustice, in contrast to his oldest brother, Dycedarg, who is willing to uphold the family name through any means possible.
Ramza has low self-esteem due to his feelings of inferiority compared to his brothers growing up, and later, his self-perceived failings to protect those he cares for. He's teased by Zalbaag for being unable to take compliments, and when someone speaks highly of him, he's quick to disparage himself, stating that he isn't a good person. Even despite his perceived inferiority, though, he's described as the "ghost of Barbaneth", being the true inheritor of his father's legacy: his love of justice and not straying from the true path of what is right, instead of seeking power or prestige.
Compared to many other major characters in the game, Ramza isn't a skilled fighter, his default job remaining as a lowly Squire. Instead, his unfailing resolve, his compassion for others, and his drive to do good are all traits that draw powerful allies to his cause. He tends to offer mercy or negotiation before a fight, although this is usually thrown back in his face and his enemy returns to challenge him later, stronger than before. Still, facing as much betrayal and death as he has, he still has faith that fighting for others is a worthwhile cause. In the end, it is his deep love for his sister, Alma, that helps her break free of Ultima's control in the final battle, and together they defeat the leader of the Lucavi.
Ultima's defeat meant Ivalice was saved, a feat few knew of except the Church. Ramza remains branded a heretic and disgraced in the eyes of the public, while Delita is hailed as a hero, a commoner who rose to become king. Ramza shows little bitterness over this, however, and is content to quietly fade into the untruths of history. He has no interest in making a mark on the world, or in being remembered. In the end, his goal was simply to keep his sister safe. He succeeded, and that, for him, is enough.
first person sample;
It is a fair day in the lands to the north of Ivalice, and for the first time in many a year, we know peace. We're resting by a stream, Alma tending to the chocobos as I scribe this on what scraps of parchment we carry with us. It is for that cause you must forgive the brevity of my words, confined as they are by circumstance.
Alma believes we should record our travels. Why, I cannot yet discern. Perhaps she wishes to preserve some small semblance of the truth, for whatever use it may serve in the future. Perhaps she simply wishes to chart the unfamiliar lands we will face as we forge ahead.
I know only this: I will not write of the past. That, too, is behind us. She and I turn our eyes to the future, and it is only that I intend to dwell upon now.
